Mcculloch 3540p Petrol Lawn Mower Manual
Lawn mower with petrol engine - 40 cm blade. Manual lawn mower. Appreciation and that your lawn mower will give you long-lasting.
in General Discussion#1
I have just moved in to a house and inherited the last occupants McCulloch 3540P Lawn Mower. It seems to have petrol in it but I pull the start up cord and nothing happens. I can't see any on/off switches although it has a cold start up button which I have tried but no luck. The mower seems to be dead basically.
Seeing as I know absolutely nothing about petrol lawnmowers and have tried googling this to no avail, can anyone offer advice about this? What could the problem be?

- #2ok first remove the spark plug ,re connect to ht lead pull cord and put plug end near metal
your looking for a spark if there isnt one use sand paper or a knife to clean the plug check replace
check petrol filter ,follow the pipe down its lengh to a box with a sponge in it take apart and clean
on your way you will find a small tap its the petrol on off
if its two stroke it might be flooded with stale mix turn off and pull cord slowly a few times to build compression whe it gets difficult swith on and pull should blow off any old fuel in the thing
wd40 is a great engine starter also remove carb gaurd and spray inside
also clean air filter its in a plastic container somewhere with a sponge inside or a cardboard thing
hope some of that helps
is it two stroke or not ?
you have the yellow peril of machines - #3Where would you like to start. It's a petrol engine and the list of causes for it not starting is as long as you want it to be.
But basically, the cause can probable be broken down to:
No or insufficient spark at plug. Check the plug, adjust, clean or renew as appropriate. Check there is then a nice big spark by grounding the plug and turning over the engine. If not, probably better to seek expert advice.
Insufficient or too much fuel reaching plug. Have you turned the fuel on? There will be a switch somewhere between the fuel tank and the carburettor. Other faults probably better left to a professional.
If the previous occupant left the lawnmower behind, chances are that it may not have worked for a long time.
Edit: beaten to it again - #4ok first remove the spark plug ,re connect to ht lead pull cord and put plug end near metal

Wow!
Thanks for the advice there. I managed to find the spark plug but thats about it. Haven't got a clue where the petrol filter is so I got kinda stuck at that point.
I'm thinking I might just borrow my dads flymo.

My thoughts also. Could be flogging a dead horse anyway. - #5Depends on the engine. Some Briggs and Stratton ones have a manual primer pump underneath the fuel tank you have to press 3-4 times to prime the engine. Looks like a round rubber button.
If its not been used for a while it may well need a full service in any event.
Of course the previous owners may have left it behind for a reason! (bugger beaten too!) - #6Ringing my dad to borrow his flymo now and I shall buy a proper lawn mower in due course.
Thanks for the advice though guys. - #7Wow!

use a spark plug spanner bout a quid at most stores
remove the plug and give it a scrape
the filter is an in line thing small plastic box usually somewhere down the pipe from the fuel tank
actually on a briggs it might be on the side of the engine
look at the rear towards the bottom for a switch to turn on the fuel
i,ll bet its flooded because of a dirty plug not firing though
also think its a two stroke but im not sure
its at the front of the engine
even a seized engine can be saved dont give up
ive saved a ransomes that had a birds nest in it tough old things lawnmowers
remove ht lead when working near the blades though
safety first
primer = dont think it will require priming but check if primer is filled up leave it be if not 2 squeezes no more
check blades arent seized by turning them WITH HT LEAD REMOVED FROM PLUG
